The white thing is called a Patronus which defeats the black thing called a Dementor which sucks your happy memories until you're left with all the bad ones. At the start of the book, Harry is fresh from his 2nd year at Hogwarts. He has to study magic at night because his aunt and uncle don't let him. So he's studying at 2:00a.m. IN THE MORNING, then he sees 3 shadowy figures flying toward him, they fall like a flump!
